Herb Gardening

This past weekend, I finally got all of the herbs that I've been buying over the past two weeks planted. I'm amazed that none of them died in the meantime. I think this pretty well does it for this year, though I may try to get some regular Oregano going.

In the ground, I have:
  • Rosemary

  • Sage

  • Greek Oregano

I'm counting on the Rosemary and Sage to make it through the winter.
In pots, I have:
  • Thyme

  • Orange Thyme

  • Sweet Basil

  • Cinnamon Basil

  • Dill

  • Tarragon

  • Flat-leaf Parley

The Dill has grown enough in the pot that it's ready to start using now. I have a few weeks on the rest, at least.

Hi Hal! Just to give you a head's up, rosemary and sage will not survive a Chicago winter, and they will not come back. You will want to transfer them to pots when the colder temps hit in the fall, or you can just start again in the spring (which is what I do). Hope you both are doing well. I am almost done with this quarter from hell, so I hope we can catch up with you guys soon! - Jenni

I had the same fear and have spent the last few years stewing in jealosy at my brother in sunny Fort Worth, where he has so much rosemary, he actually has to trim it back like his other bushes.

I asked a few gardeners here and, while a bit difficult, it is possible to pull off both. We're at the south end of one of those gardening Zones (5, I think), so some of those "rules" apply. When the weather starts to turn in the late fall, I'm told I need to mound mulch around the bases and put plastic bags around the plants. This (hopefully) will keep the roots from freezing. Fingers crossed...
